ANIMATION
I don't call myself a 'professional' animator, but I have made several animations as hobby and have worked on one major animation comission project. Animation as a medium has its own way of telling stories, and provides a chance of realising special effects that real-life camera shooting cannot achieve. The area of animation has a lot to explore.
New animated music video! (2022)
This video was made for a team theme song in KOF XV. The leader of the team is a Chilean teenage girl who is a graffiti artist, and my animation tries to show her 'spice'. This is definitely my favourite piece of animation so far!!
Recap cartoons for KOF (2021)
I started a fan project making recap cartoons of the stories in the KOF series. The cartoon's visual narrative styles are influenced by the recap cartoons of Cas van de Pol and HISHE. These cartoons have received good feedback in the KOF fandom community and the most popular video has reached over 100k views on YouTube! Below are two of my favourite:
Animated music videos (2019)
The following animations are commissions from a songwriter, Tim Thomas, for his songs in his musical. I experimented with different art styles and have been exploring 2D animation's characteristics and unique ways of visual storytelling. The challenging part about making animated music videos is visualising the parts of the lyrics that are describing things that cannot be 'seen', for example 'reached the heights of evolution'. In these cases I needed to create visual symbols to represent the concepts described in the lyrics.
WeChat GIF stickers (2016)
These animated "stickers" (similar to emotes) are designed for WeChat, a smartphone app quite similar to WhatsApp. It seems that China has a 'sticker culture', because compared to western countries, it seems that Chinese people enjoy using chat stickers much more often, while westerners tend to use simple emoticons or emoji. There is even a phrase in Chinese which means 'fight with images' (Chinese: 斗图), which means bombarding someone in a chat with your best sticker collections.
