ON LOCATION LIFE DRAWING

Different from the reportage drawings on the other page, which focus on the record of events, the drawings in this page are studies of still items and environments - and this is much easier than reportage, since my drawing subjects will not be moving around. Compared to a studio setting, I've always preferred venturing outside and discovering the beauty of a city/village with pen and paper.

I use on-location drawing for both practicing drawing skills and collecting visual materials. Many of my non-artists friends say. 'Why bother if you can use a camera?' My answer is that drawing is more than a visual recording method. It trains how we see and visualise our surroundings, and how we apply appropriate styles to the translation of 3D objects to marks on a paper.
